I know, you may be thinking 'what in the world is she talking about?' This so-called mountain I am talking about is none other than the McLane Stadium bridge. During my training this week I had three 4-mile runs and a 7-mile run on Saturday. One of the 4-mile runs was a speed run which means I did a two-mile warm-up followed by a set of 30-sec sprint and a 30-sec walk, this repeated consistently for around a mile, and a cool-down mile followed after.
We decided to do this speed workout at the stadium bridge because the Bearathon requires a lot of hills out of runners. While running the bridge, I was utterly exhausted. The bridge itself is a slow incline on both sides leaving you to always climb it. Although it is not considered a true mountain, while we were running it, it definitely felt like one. By the time we were done, I was huffing and puffing. I had no idea that I could find such a hill in Waco and how hard it was going to be. I am so thankful we ran there as it will help in training and improve stamina while running hills during the half.
On Saturday, I ran a long run of seven miles and I still am in awe that my body accomplished that length. It is crazy to think that that is over half of a half marathon and it was not as hard as I thought it would be. I got to talk to my mom for most of the run which made it fly by and it gave us a great opportunity to catch up! As the mileage increases per week, I am feeling confident that my body can accomplish this goal.
Running a half marathon seems intimidating but once you start the journey, anyone can realize it is possible.
